Stormchaser Mr Charles D Carlisle Books

Jacob is man in love with drinking, smoking, sex, and rock n' roll. For years Jacob dreamed of rocking it out on stages all over the world. His lyrics touching the hearts of women everywhere. That is until he meets William West, of the Chicago rock band Tornado Horizon. A slick, red haired, guitarist that slowly breaks his way into Jacob's heart, and into his pants. Jacob has to make the ultimate choice, stay true to his friends, or surrender to the sick strumming of William's fingers.

I almost put this down in the first pages because of the slow pacing of the book. The first chapters are backstory and prologue that had it been professionally edited probably would have been tossed. And the narrative POV is distanced from the two main characters. The narrator is a an anonymous third person. POV between is switched like a ping pong ball within scenes which is disconcerting. What I like about the book was the realistic but somewhat sad portrayal of the emotions of the two main protagonists. Both of them are desperately trying to deny their feelings and shove them in a dark space, propelling them to their ultimate conclusion. You feel for Jacob, who is willing victim and enabling of William's inability to commit. There are excuses as always, and the author never explores what it means to be gay or having gay sex in the eighties. It was still a time of repression, but this is not mentioned. The rock band lifestyle apparently is a free license to ignore society's conventions.
I was puzzled about the time setting. It didn't seem to have a specific purpose, nor was it tied to the events of that time. The story could have just as easy been set closer to 2016 and we wouldn't have lost context. Same thing with the character of Jacob. A female could have been used and we wouldn't have lost the crux of the story. So there are some lost opportunities for storytelling here. It's just not enough that William falls apart and then offstage, so to speak, pulls his life together. Exploring why, against societies conventions he falls in love with Jacob, and how he resolves his expectations for his life to the what ultimately defines him is the story.
But in the end I related to both characters, so that made wading through the torturous first third worth it. I think this author has potential if he digs into his characters and pulls their story from them. I look forward to reading more books by him.
